Extend the life of nail polish by keeping it in (yes you’ve guessed it!) the fridge

Use lemon juice to whiten nails stained by nail polish

Lemon juice can also be used to remove hair-dye splodges from the hairline, and fake tan mishaps

Get the most from your moisturiser by regularly exfoliating skin. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that gather on the skin surface and prevent your moisturiser from absorbing properly. Don’t overdo it, though – exfoliate no more than twice a week

Use petroleum jelly to remove eye makeup

Use SPF15 or higher every day, but don’t use a moisturiser containing SPF at night as it can lead to breakouts

Men should avoid shaving their face first thing in the morning. Fluids build up in the face overnight, puffing out the skin and making it harder to get a close shave

Then wait until the sun lotion is dry before dressing your little lamb. If you treat the process as a massage, baby will be more relaxed and you won’t end up with cream all over the place.

To protect your little one’s face, choose a gentle baby sun cream that won’t sting baby’s eyes. Put a bib on him/her and sit the child into a buggy or high chair. Rub a generous amount of sunscreen between your fingers and – standing BEHIND baby – apply sunscreen to his/her face, neck and ears using gentle, upward strokes and avoiding baby’s eyes. Easy peasy!

Best of all, facial massage is FREE, which may in itself sort out one or two of those stress-related frown lines.

Unless otherwise indicated, massage facial skin in an upward motion to counter the effects of gravity and improve skin elasticity which declines as we age, causing loose, saggy skin and the Winston Churchill jowls most of us would rather avoid. Remember to work with firm but gentle strokes for best results.

If you try massaging a squeaky clean face, your fingers will drag the skin rather than gliding over it so, after cleansing your skin thoroughly, apply your usual moisturiser or facial oil.

Forehead
Using gentle pressure, apply the index, middle finger and ring finger of each hand to the centre of your forehead for a count of 3. Then, without breaking contact with the skin, draw a spiral of upward circles out to each temple, with the right hand moving towards the right temple and the left hand moving towards the left temple. Repeat x 3

Temples
Gently but firmly, press pressure points (the slight depression between the bones) at temples using index and middle finger for a count of 3 and then release. Repeat x 3

Eyes
Using gentle pressure applied by index and middle finger, slowly tap along your brow bone towards the inner hollow of your eye, leaving middle finger to rest there for a count of 5. Then slowly tap along the under-eye socket using index and middle finger. Repeat this rotation x 3 and finish by tapping out towards the temples to drain toxins

Nose
With index finger, gently press the inner hollow of your eye and run finger straight down each side of your nose. Repeat x 3

Mouth
Move index finger in small upward and outward circles around the lips. Repeat x 3

Cheeks
Massage in small circles, moving upwards and outwards:
• Along jaw bone from chin to earlobes x 3
• From corners of mouth to the middle of ears x 3
• From nostrils to temples x 3

Chin/jaw
• First press the index and middle finger of the left and right hands under each earlobe at the point where the jaw and ear meet
• Then, with one finger just below the jawbone and one just above it on each side of your face, slowly tap in towards the centre of your chin
• Using upward and outward small circles, massage back to the starting point under each earlobe. Repeat x 3

Neck
• Start at the back of your neck, massage up to your hairline using small circular motions. Repeat x 3
• Moving to the front of the neck, lightly stroke upwards from collarbone to the base of the chin. Repeat x 3

Ears
• Massage from earlobes upwards, using your thumb and index finger to create small circles.
• Then, with ear between thumb and index finger, move down towards base of earlobe gently pulling the ear. Repeat x 3

Applying false lashes is a bit tricky at first but you’ll soon get the hang of it. Here are a few hints to get you started:

* Do your eye makeup before applying your lashes. If you wish, hold off on the mascara until the falsies are in place

* Choose the lashes to suit the look you want – from natural ‘work’ lashes to foxy ‘come-get-me’ man magnets

* Before applying eyelash glue, hold the lashes against your lash line. If they’re too long, trim one side to fit

* Squeeze a thin line of eyelash adhesive to the back of your hand and place the eyelash base strip along it. Wait 30 seconds for the glue to become tacky. While you’re waiting, flex the lash strip back and forth to form a ‘U’ shape

* Using tweezers, run the lash strip as close as possible to the base of your natural eyelashes and press down each end to position correctly. Apply gentle pressure along the lash strip until the eyelash glue is dry

* Gently curl eyelashes (optional but worth it) using an eyelash curler, first making sure the glue is dry

* Sweep on mascara to bond your own lashes to the false ones. It’s best to place your finger along the top of your eyelashes as you do this to keep your precious lashes in place

Voila! Bambi-like eye sweepers

We know that SPF helps protect us from UVB rays which cause sunburn, but it’s UVA rays that we should be most concerned about as these cause premature skin aging and contribute to skin cancers, such as melanoma.

Ultra-high SPF does not offer all-day protection; what’s important is how much sunscreen you apply and how often you apply it. For instance, if you apply half the recommended amount of SPF100, the protection level will be only SPF10!

The recommended amount of sunscreen is 30ml (equivalent to a shot glass measure) every two hours to ensure that your skin is protected. You’ll also need to reapply sunscreen after swimming. When you compare the effectiveness of different SPFs in terms of blocking UVB rays, there’s surprisingly little difference:

SPF = % UVB rays blocked

SPF100 = 99%

SPF50: = 98%

SPF25 = 96%

SPF15 = 93%

So to stay safe in the sun this summer, choose an adequate SPF sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, and reapply the recommended amount every two hours.
